Iași Airport Sets Record with 2.34 Million Passengers Served, One-Third from Moldova

The Iași Airport recorded a historic high, serving 2.34 million passengers in the past year, which is a 52% increase compared to 2022.

Last year, the Iași Airport ranked third in the country in terms of size, following Otopeni with 14.6 million passengers and Cluj-Napoca with 3.24 million passengers.

The director of Iași Airport, Romeo Vatră, stated:

"This is the highest passenger traffic in the history of the airport. All forecasts that predicted reaching two million passengers not earlier than in 15 years have been exceeded. We expect the passenger traffic to double in the coming years."

Romeo Vatră emphasized that 2023 was particularly challenging due to the construction of the new terminal amidst record passenger traffic.

It is reported that the new Terminal T4, which cost tens of millions of euros, will open on March 31, not in May as originally planned. This became possible after Romania received approval for entry into the Schengen area by air.

"We worked together with representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Border Police, and airport staff to find an optimal solution for processing passenger traffic and preparing for Schengen entry,"

added Romeo Vatră.

The objective for Iași Airport this year is to serve over two million passengers. An interesting fact: in 2023, a third of the airport's passengers were citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
